High Functioning Autistic or Asperger
Autism is a complex collection of behaviors that generally surfaces around age two. Aspergers is a mild form autism. Children can have a wide range of abilities, and the diagnosis runs along a spectrum, reflecting the child's level of cognitive and language impairment.
Autism is usually characterized by physical repetitive movements such as rocking or flapping of the arms. These children have problems in social interaction, they usually engage in repetitive, obsessive routines. They focus on a single interest. Sensory stimulation often overwhelms these kids with fury or shutting down completely.

  • break skills into small measurable tasks
  • rewards are very helpful
  • do not reward in any way negative behaviors
  • teachers should keep a record of what is working and what is not
  • Floortime Foundation emphasizes social, emotional and intelectual capacities instead of focused skills and isolated behavior.

Assignment # 5: Comment on possible advantages of having AlphaBet Syndrome. Why might nature have done this? Is there any genetic advantage to any of these special populations.
I really don´t know if it is nature or evolution who programmed people to be different, maybe it is the combination of both. What I know is that the world is changing and we are part of this change. We are now exposed to a lot of information and technology which makes our life easier. We are use to work under stress, doing multi task activities, trying to survive in this world where the strongest will win. I also know that all human are different and all respond in different ways. Maybe this is why nature has programmed people with different needs. Some are not ready to enter to this new era of information and technology. For example children with Asperger´s syndrome, generally have difficulty interacting with others and often are awkward in social situations, they also have eccentric or repetitive behaviors, such as finger twisting and also unusual preoccupation or rituals. Research tells us that many children with Asperger's syndrome are exceptionally talented or skilled in a particular area. Maybe that is something we need or something that we are losing because of all the information and technology we are being exposed.

7. Read the Book MI in the Elementary Classroom. Pick two activities from the back of the chapters. Implement two of these ideas into your class. Write a report of 250 (+-) words describing your activity

Activity 1

First I will tell you a little bit about my class and myself. This is a second grade class with 21 students, 9 girls and 12 boys. This is my first year as a teacher and I feel very happy. Since this is elementary we teach all subjects, Math, Reading, Language, and Unit of Inquiry. I implemented this activity in my unit of inquiry period.
I picked up the pod castactivity because I thought it fit perfectly with my unit “sharing the planet”. Our central idea is “Our Personal Action can change the Planet” base on that I asked my students to elaborate an action plan (which can take different forms in this case is a pod cast) to persuade others to reduce waste and/or properly dispose of various forms of garbage so they change the environment in a positive way. I divide my class into 5 groups according to their topics:
· Saving energy
· Saving water
· Littering at Colegio Roosevelt
· Brushing Teeth
· Recycling
First they had to create their sketch on a piece of paper. They had to include photos, pictures, text and music. After receiving my approval they had to go to the computer lab and work on Garage Band to work on the podcast. Teachers from the tech lab were supporting us. I really enjoyed watching my students be creative. I could see them interact in a positive and negative way. I learned that for some of my students it is very challenging to work in groups.
The idea of making students be exposed to technology and make them DO a podcast was wonderful. They really enjoyed the activity, but my only concerns were: time, the amount of students per group and some of my students getting along with each other. They had some difficulty accepting ideas from friends.
I would definitely do this activity again. My students really enjoyed and learned a great deal. The only two things I would do to make it better are: a time line and separate students in smaller groups.

Activity 2

For the second activity I got the idea from Pop-Up Interest Center. I got inspired after reading how a group of students were invited to create a pop up book about endangered animals. I decided to do the same activity with my second grade students but instead of writing about endangered animals we did it on things we can do to save the planet. I did this activity during my language block. I decided to work on centers because working in small groups can really help students focus. Groups with larger numbers are too easily distracted and it is difficult to give individual attention to each student’s progress within a large group.
We first discussed as a group, all the possible things we can do to save the planet. We ended with a big list:
· Use less water
· Turn off the light when you are not using it
· Use light bulb saver
· Unplugged electrical appliances
· Recycle
· Reuse
· Reduce
After working on our list I explained them that each one had to choose a topic and make a pop up card. I showed them the one I made and then I went step by step teaching them how to make one. After making their card they had to explain what his/her card was about.
Materials:
· Construction paper
· Scissors
· Pencil
· Glues
· Optional: color pencil, markers, glitter, etc
This activity took 2 days to finish. My artist students really enjoyed it and they even had time to do two of them. My other students struggled being creative and had some difficulty staying on task. I really liked doing this activity with my students because I got to see aspects of my kids that I don’t see often. They were very tolerant, caring and creative. Do to our schedule we don’t have time to work on art in the class. Because of that I really don’t know them that well. After this activity now I know that I have really good artists in my class.
